How to Avoid Tantrums When Playing Online Toddler Games

Playing on the computer can be tons of fun. It’s very exciting for toddlers who want to feel independent and grown-up while imitating older siblings or parents.

Here are a few things I’ve found helpful in setting the ground rules with the computer.

# Set up which sites your kids can visit - Particularly with my little ones, I make it clear right from the start that we go to the sites that I’ve approved.

# Bookmarks within your internet browser are a wonderful way to help guide your child toward the right website. Set up a folder within your browser with your child’s name (hint: spell the name in all capital letters, since these are easier to recognize).

# Set clear, strict time limits - Computer games are an easy way for anyone (even parents) to zone out and get overstimulated. I recommend that you set a clear time limit for computer use, ranging from about 15-30 minutes.

# Make it clear that disputes are not allowed - Every time your child goes on the computer, remind him that cooperation is part of computer use. Make it clear that begging for more time, complaining about having less time than someone else, etc., is not allowed.

# Finally, stay close by. Just like any activity for toddlers, a parent needs to closely supervise computer activity. If you can’t sit with her, then make sure the computer is very nearby and located so you can quickly help.

Where to Find the Best Online Toddler Games

Here are a few tips to help you find the best online toddler games.

# There are plenty for free - Online toddler games are plentiful online, and there’s no need to pay. Tell your family members this, too, so they don’t go out and spend a bunch of money on games that aren’t really needed.

# Go with favorite characters - A great way to find an online toddler game that your child will enjoy is to look up the website for his favorite character. This is a wonderful way to find exactly what will tickle your child.

# Don’t rule out music videos - Although online toddler games are fun, there are many toddler-appropriate music videos on most of the entertainment sites, too. A wonderful place to start with a wide variety of videos is on the Noggin website, where “Jack’s Big Music Show” has tons of great videos.

# Get ready to repeat, repeat, repeat - Toddler learning happens with repetition. Be ready to play the same game or the same video over until you can’t stand it. Just take a deep breath and play the game again, and remember that after all it’s not your computer time.
