Toddlers Activities

Is your toddler active in his or her activities? If you can answer no to any of these questions, then it’s time to turn off the tv and those DVD’s and video games, and be a part of your toddler activities. When a toddler/child sits and watches television all day or is actively watching DVD’s or playing video games to pass the time, everything is pretty much laid out and done for them. No imagination or much activity required.

A toddler needs some sort of an active imagination in order to learn things for themselves. Sure it’s okay to have little learning toys such as books with sound buttons and a DVD or two to help with the learning of numbers, the alphabet, animals, and even a few songs. A child needs hands on activity.

Children are people too, who in turn need recognition that they exist other than at mealtime, bath time, and bedtime. Spend an hour or two actually playing with your toddler activities. Play roll the ball into a tower of blocks, knocking them down, and then let the child restack them. This helps with motor skills and is good for hand/eye coordination.

Toddlers/children love to dance and sing, which is a great physical activity for exercise. Sing songs with them that require finger, hand, and body movements, as well as remembering sounds, items, and words. Three great songs for this activity is: ‘Itsy, Bitsy, Spider’- ‘The Wheels on the Bus’- and ‘Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes’.

A sandbox or even a small plastic pool filled with sand is a great hands on movement activity. It does well for the imagination plus also helps develop hand/eye coordination. There are many sand toys that can be purchased, plus also, lots of household items work extremely well. Watch, or better yet, play with them as they learn to build a dirt cake and start adding sticks for candles or little rocks as decorations. Help them build a sand castle and use plastic cookie cutters to press shapes on the walls.

Use some imagination yourself while thinking of your toddler activities.

Staying home with your children is wonderful, but some times it is a lifesaver to get out of the house. Here are some cool places to bring your toddler.

1. The Local Pet Store - If your child loves animals, the local pet store is a great place to bring him. They have hamsters, dogs, fish… Take your time and stroll around let your toddler decide what he want to look at.

2. Picnic in the The Park - Take your toddler to a park or a playground. Bring a picnic and a blanket and you will have a wonderful time. Hopefully you can relax at little bit with your toddler.

3. Museum - If you have any fun children’s museums near by, this a great way to spend a day and for your toddler activities.

4. The Woods - Take your toddler for a stroll in the woods. Talk to her what she see, hear, smell and can touch. Is there anything to taste? This is a great way to discover things, burn some energy and breathe some fresh air.

5. Dollar Store - Give her a dollar or two and let her go through the hole buying process herself (with your help). Let her pick out what she wants, stand in line and pay the cashier. A good learning experience and I am sure she will have fun.

6. Library - A great place to take your toddler is to the library. They read books, sing, and dance and do small craft projects. You get the chance to talk to some adults and your toddler will meet friends. Check the schedule with your local library.
